Consumers Sue Whole Foods

A group of consumers and an animal welfare organization have filed a class-action lawsuit against Whole Foods, one of the world’s largest high-end grocery chains, claiming traces of antibiotics were found in their beef products labeled antibiotic free, according to the lawsuit filed in California. Whole Foods was purchased by e-commerce giant Amazon.com in 2017.

One of the plaintiffs, Portland-based Farm Forward, said its own testing in 2021 and 2022 revealed traces of monensin sodium, a growth antibiotic, in a single sample of a Whole Foods beef product, and fenbendazole, an antiparasitic, in five Whole Foods beef products. Farm Forward’s mission is to “end factory farming.” Many of Whole Foods’ cattle are sourced through the Global Animal Partnership, or GAP, program. Ranchers have increasingly enrolled their cattle in GAP programs like AngusLink as a way of increasing value in their calves and addressing consumer concerns over antibiotic use
